The pieces that Vidya Balan wore at Cannes were created and curated specially as a result of a collaboration with (designer) Sabyasachi Mukherjee and the looks he envisioned. For any artist, the muse is the inspiration. Vidya, as the quintessential, proud, modern Indian woman, wasthe muse. She was representing India on the red carpet, so the look created had to be both culturally sincere and proud.
Says sabyasachi “Jewellery, I believe, is meant to enhance personality, grace and elegance, not to overwhelm. With that conviction, I first visualise a holistic look with the personality of the wearer in mind. Finding the right quality of materials is very important to me. Lastly, design and material have to be tied together with master craftsmanship and construction. I only want to create pieces which a mother would be proud to pass on to her daughter. Simplicity, dignity and elegance are my guidelines. A prominent influence in my journey has been Fred Leighton in New York, a lifelong friend and mentor. The ethos of marriage of exquisite materials with ti meless design and extreme emphasis on craftsmanship is what I have learned from him.
To me, “design” means creating the most aesthetically appealing form that fits the context in which the piece will be worn.
